A Personal Side to Social Lending
February 11, 2010 by John38 · 9 Comments
Did you know that you can borrow or let out money through online groups? As an innovative idea based to begin with on an old notion, social lending has been a ray of hope in turbulent economic periods and has turned into a favored option for borrowed money. As a favorable base, community financial assistance offers loan applicants reasonable interest and a comparatively favorable interest than CD’s for the creditor. With a psychological side to it, loan applicants feel that they would rather pay a private person than a bank, while creditors make more favorable returns and at the same time have the chance to help a person who is in need of the funds.
Social borrowers are normally individuals who cannot cough up a full interest and are unable to find loans from regular avenues owing to poor credit. They have a number of reasons for borrowing funds that range from high to low expenses. Social lenders on the other hand like to lend money like a financial institution, but have the facility unlike a regular establishment such as the benefit of near-term returns and a chance to help individuals who need the money for personal and important reasons.
Community borrowing websites are available in nearly all the major countries though some of them do not accept new lenders. The more popular community borrowing sites in America are Prosper.com, Lending Club, Loanio.com that uses Prosper.com’s bidding process and a guarantor alternative, Circlelending offers loans secured by friends and relations, while GreenNote and Fynanz deal in student loans. Zopa.com advertises collateralized loans, Kiva.org like MyC4 deal with microloans to developing countries around the globe with amenities of opting for borrowers; MicroPlace.com offers collateralized loans. Though quite a risky enterprise, social lending has options such as putting money out for credit in little amounts often as small as $50 to loan applicants who need the money immediately and quickly. The borrowers can add to their credit score by paying with promptness as promptness in repayment is notified to the credit bureau like banks. With greater numbers of social lending sites, borrowers can enjoy the protection and the amenity of obtaining money on time from reliable sources.
The World of Balloons

Introduction to Balloons
The word ‘Balloons’ conjures up images in your mind of simple balloons you inflate for kid’s parties, or balloons that fly off on their own, or the special balloons for key events like the ones produced for the wedding of Charles and Diana? There are so many different types of balloons on the market that you can get almost anything for any event you need. Balloons are a bright, bouncy item that can be used for many different purposes, including kid’s or adult parties, product launches for advertising or promotional events.
When you think about it, a balloon is quite an odd item. It is something that expands when filled with air or some other type of gas, such as Helium or hydrogen and is very fragile so that it can easily burst. The very first balloons would have been made with non-flexible material but modern balloons have great elasticity because they are made of Latex and can be filled up to create much larger sizes than earlier ones.
Balloons Throughout History
The first known balloons were very simple in that they were made out of the bowels of cats. The Aztec Indians in Central and Southern America carefully cleaned out the cat gut, turned it inside out and stitched it with special vegetable thread that stuck to itself when dried in the sun creating an almost airtight seal. The balloons were shaped into model animals and then filled with air to be burnt on the top of the Aztec pyramid as an offering to the sun god. This is the first recorded history of balloon modelling. Early balloons were made of animal guts and were turned into play things for the local community.
The first public showing of a balloon was at the Portuguese Court in Lisbon in 1809 by a Portuguese priest, Bartolomeu de Gusmao, and was most likely to be made from an animal bladder that stretched when filled with air. The modern rubber balloon was invented in eighteen twenty four by Michael Faraday the renowned English chemist and physicist who invented, amongst other many other things, the Faraday cage and he also made huge contributions to the fields electromagnetism and electrochemistry. The balloons Faraday used were filled with hydrogen for his science experiments with Hydrogen, but the more familiar Latex balloon did not appear until 1847. Although the Latex balloon was manufactured in London in the mid eighteen hundreds and early rubber balloons were sold in America in parks and circuses for a penny each; the mass production of them did not happen until 100 years later in 1931.
The world of balloons became more advanced as they developed in line with technology. Now balloons are made from rubber Latex, polychloroprene or nylon and may be inflated with air, Helium, hydrogen or water. Inflating the balloon with air can be done with the mouth, a manual hand pump, electric inflator, foot pump or with compressed gas. Balloons are used for many differing purposes, and decorated in numerous ways to fit the event. Balloons are usually used for entertainment or displays.
Some balloons are purely for decoration, others are ideal for specific purposes because of their low density and relatively low cost. The balloon’s properties have led to them being used in a wide range of other applications in the areas of meteorology, military defence, medical treatment, and transportation. There are many different types of balloons which can be categorised under different headings.
Different Types of Balloons
Good Old Party Balloons
The most popular types of balloons are the ones we are used to seeing at parties, particularly a child’s party. These are often bought in small packets and blown up by mouth or with a pump to create a festive scene for children’s parties and other kinds of celebratory events. These days you often see a balloon cluster at the entrance to a house or hall to indicate where the party is being held, it has almost become a universal indicator of a party in progress! The balloons come in many different sizes and colours and can have printing on the face which expands as the balloon is blown up. Party balloons are mostly made of natural Latex tapped from rubber trees. The rubber’s elasticity makes the volume variable. Balloons filled with air always hold their size and shape much longer than those filled with Helium.
There is a great range of colours for balloons and many different sizes due to the flexibility of the material from which they are made. You can use cartoon characters on printed balloons that become larger than life once inflated.
Foil Balloons
The foil balloon or Mylar balloons first appeared during the late 1970s. They are generally more costly than Latex balloons and are made of thin non-stretch metalized plastic film or Mylar. The first time I remember them being used a major event was when they made an appearance at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana and they caused quite a stir. Mylar balloons have a nice high gloss reflective texture and can be supplied with colour pictures, logos and patterns to customise them. The most useful property of metalized nylon for balloons is its ability to prevent the Helium gas from escaping for several weeks because it is less permeable. Foil balloons also have the benefit of being light weight, longer-lasting with greater buoyancy. They are best for extraordinary celebrations, in-store decorations, parties and for gifts. At our granny’s ninetieth birthday party a few weeks ago I brought along a foil balloon with 90 printed on it to add to the festive occasion.
Balloons in Animal Shapes
Balloons in animal shapes are ade from metalized nylon which can easily be cut into pieces so that when pressed together they make the three dimensional shapes of animals. Screen printing the appropriate design on the model, makes the chosen animal come realistically alive. Once inflated, these unique balloons make a very bright decorative impact for that special event. Balloons in animal shapes may be used as gifts or as a talking point at your special event. Balloons in animal shapes can make a great birthday gift for a child as an extra pleasure.
Rockets from Balloons
Inflating a balloon and releasing it go before tying it is as game most kids play at some time or another (and adults too)! The rude noise it makes generally has everyone falling about laughing as it zooms all over the room. This game is teaching the children basically how a rocket works and they are called balloon rockets. As a kid I can remember being fascinated as I learned why it did that.
When the top of the balloon is let-go, the elasticity of the balloon contracts so that the higher pressure of air inside is forced out causing the balloon to be propelled forward. This is basically how a rocket works. The balloon can also be inflated with different gases other than air, with similar results. Balloon rockets are a widely used a learning aid to show the principles in laws of nature of the functioning of a rocket. The balloon rocket is also regularly used to demonstrate Newton’s third law in physics. Children can have hours of fun playing with balloons as a balloon rocket. The unpredictability of where they will go adds fun to the fun.
Balloons Filled With Water
The water balloons are obviously filled with water and are intended for children to chuck at each other as a game or practical joke with the aim of getting each other drenched. They are generally smaller than normal sized balloons and made from weaker rubber so that they can be easily broken. Water balloons are often used in competitions or games.
Balloons Filled with Helium Gas
The reason Helium balloons float is because they are filled with Helium gas which is lighter than air. So for an event where balloons are set off into the sky, they will all be Helium filled balloons. If the Helium balloons are rubber balloons they usually only retain their buoyancy for a few days. This is because the Latex has tiny holes that are bigger than the enclosed Helium atoms so the Helium gradually leaks out. To increase the life span of a Helium balloon the inside of the balloons can be coated with a special polymer solution which reduces the leakage of the Helium for a week or more. Having even just one foil Helium filled balloon at a small party can create a special effect to enhance the occasion. If you require a large amount of balloons then buy wholesale balloons to acquire the amount required.
Balloon Sculptures
Balloon Sculptures are made from hundreds of balloons to create a solid structure such as a balloon arch, wall or statute. Other shapes are more difficult, but on occasion more ambitious sculptures have been created so they are possible. These sculptures are usually made and designed by professional party decorators as it is a very skilled job. Balloon sculptures are really quite limited because of the shape of the balloons but with intelligent colour choice simple arches or walls can make an impressive feature at your party. The balloons need to be precision filled with exactly the same amount of gas and to do this professional balloon sculptors use electronic equipment to deliver the exact amount of Helium into the balloon. For non-floating balloons air inflators are used. Professional quality balloons differ from most retail packet balloons as they are bigger in size, stronger and made from one hundred percent biodegradable Latex. Sometimes Helium balloons are used as table decorations for special events which may have three or 5 balloons with an arrangement of flowers. The decoration will generally include curled ribbon with an added weight to stop the balloons from floating away.
Balloon Modelling and Balloons in Art
Balloon modelling is a popular entertainment for children and adults alike and is not to be confused with balloon sculptures discussed above. The Latex used for balloon modelling is made of extra-stretchy rubber so that it can be manipulated and tied without popping when making the balloon model. A Balloon modelling artist pulls and twists the inflated modelling balloons into shapes resembling animals, people or hats. When I have watched these artists at work I am always anxious that the balloons will burst when they are twisting and tying their handy work. These tiny tubular balloons are extremely tricky to inflate and often need a pump to get them started, until you have developed the lungs for it.
Dropping Lots of Balloons from a Net
Most people have seen a party or dance where at the end of the night hundreds of balloons are dropped from the roof to create excitement and fun amongst the party guests. This is known as a balloon drop and is often performed at parties such as New Year’s Eve celebrations or at political rallies and conventions. It is a relatively low budget way of creating a festive atmosphere at the party climax, so everyone goes home feeling they have had a really great evening.
It is possible to setup your own balloon drop for that special event providing you have a room with enough height. To begin with you will need to set up a large plastic bag or net overhead, which is suspended at the required height. Get your other organisers to lend a hand with inflating balloons as it can take quite a while to do the number needed. Then pile the inflated balloons into the net and make sure the opening works so that the balloons will fall onto the target area below when they are let go. You will also need to devise a mechanism for releasing the balloons.
Balloons used in balloons arches a stronger Latex balloon is used, instead of regular balloons.
Mass Balloon Releases
Because of concerns about the impact on the environment of a large amount of balloons being released, the NABAS – The Balloon Association have produced a code of practise that is available on their website at www.nabas.co.uk
If you are preparing a balloon release of more than 5,000 balloons, it is a pre-requisite that you apply in writing for permission to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) at least 28 days in advance. The CAA also like to be notified about balloon releases involving less than 5,000. An application form can be obtained by calling either the NABAS office on 01989 762 204 or the Airspace Utilisation Section of the CAA on 020 7453 6599
Environmental Concerns and Balloon Safety
Latex is an organic product obtained from rubber trees that are grown in certain regions of the tropics, so balloons are actually organic being manufactured from natural rubber Latex (NRL). These trees are not harvested to produce the NRL. The NRL is harvested by tapping mature plants and is an indespensible sustainable crop providing employment for many agricultural workers in some of the poorest regions of the world. Latex is a sustainable crop that is good for the environment and the economy of the country in which the rubber trees are grown.
The planting and maintenance of rubber tree plantations contributes towards the prevention of tropical rainforest deforestation. Without the cultivation and the consumption of Latex products the plantations may very well become just another casualty of the clearance of land for arable use. One of the great advantages of NRL cultivation is the significant contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere that is produced by industrialised nations and is a major source of global warming.
Printed Latex balloons are an absolutely fantastic, low-cost and environmentally friendly way of advertising your promotion or event.
Conclusion
The toy balloon has been a source of pleasure and excitement for many years at celebratory events such as parties, product launches and conferences throughout the world. They have been an educational tool as well as providing hours of entertainment and interest for children and adults alike. Non toy balloons are used for experiments in science, as an aid for heart repair in medicine and even as a form of travel as in the hydrogen air ship idea. Balloons are invaluable in helping us to learn about our world and some of the properties of physics.
USA Copper Mountain
November 18, 2009 by John38 · 14 Comments
Copper Mountain was referred to as the best ski slope in “North America” by the US Forestry Service, for its amazing resources and ability to cater for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers. Based only 120 KM from Denver airport and with 160 meters of pure skiing fun, Copper Mountain is the only place to go skiing in America.
With a 3 Kilometre base and a summit of nearly 4 kilometres it is no wonder the slope is big enough to handle over 30,000 visitors on a monthly basis. With twenty two lifts the Copper Mountain is renowned for its 6 man high speed lift, 5 doubles, 5 triples, surface chairs, quad lifts, tubing zone and even quad lifts that can travel in excess of 40 kilometres per hour.
The upper lifts close at 1500 every evening, meaning you get 30 minutes to complete your last run before your days skiing is over. Opening at 9am in the morning Monday to Friday there is no excuse for not getting an early start. At the weekends the lifts open around a half an hour earlier, making it much easier to fit more skiing into your day.
In total Copper Mountain covers two and a half thousand acres, and stands nearly 800 metres tall. With 125 trails in total, 18% cater for expert skiers, 36% for advanced skiers, 21% for beginners and 25% for intermediates. The snowfall in Cooper Mountain is also something to be reckoned with; the total snowfall in November to April of 2005/2006 was 283.58, with March appearing to be the best month for snow. Although April to November provides the best snow, Copper Mountain also has an avalanche machine keeping the slop active for around 12 months in the year. This machine works by releasing a gas that turns water into snow. The machine provides genuine powdery snow that can even be altered to be icier, or softer to meet the needs of the skiers.
The Copper Mountain is set to be active for 12 months of the year, as of some point in the next two years, whilst plans are also unveiled for an indoor facility. The massive success of Copper Mountain is said to be partially attributable to hosting world snowboarding events, and also offering other activities such as snow tubing which is becoming increasingly popular, as well as snowshoeing, hiking, biking and snowmobile vehicles.
When I last visited Copper Mountain major regeneration work had just begun. They had started re-building the lift, their were hotel and lodging developments, and they have even started investing in real estate. From what I understand you will be able to buy a property overlooking the amazing slopes in a small amount of time. They had also seen the importance and the market that exists for training skiing. When a facility has the best training facility, new skiers are more likely to come along, learn how to ski at Copper Mountain and then come back year after year. They have built a complex that will house and support their training team, and they intend to offer lessons for a great price to encourage people to learn how to ski at Copper Mountain.
Copper Mountain is also home to freestyle snowboarding facilities which are becoming increasingly with teenagers looking to get started in winter sports. The snowboarding facilities include ramps, half-pipes, jumps and runs, whilst also being flood light, allowing the facility to operate much later than when the lifts stop functioning.
If you have never been to Copper Mountain then you will soon realize why it is rated as the best Skiing facility in America. Did you know that many film scenes have been completed on this mountain? It may also surprise you to know that this is usually completed when there is no snow on the mountains, and an avalanche machine generates snow in the absence of a any skiers or tourists.

What is in the Atkins Diet?
With all of the diets out there, it’s a wonder which one is the right one for you. Do you have the money to invest in just trying to see if it works? Is it worth the time or even the possible harm that it can put on your body? These are some of the questions that you may want to ask yourself.
When fast paced America discovers that fast food diets will add the weight, it is a wonder why we are all becoming obese. Well who is going to stop it? Unfortunately we have to just take care of our own family now and days.
If we learn to balance our health then it is in the best interest of our family overall. There are many things that we can enjoy but then there is a time to lose the weight that has over taken our bodies. There are so many diets but the Atkins Diet comes to mind.
The History of the Atkins Diet
This diet was formulated by Dr. Robert Atkins in 1998. The main purpose for this diet is the fact that it is a low carbohydrate diet. It was founded in 1989 but not yet released until 1998. Shortly after the death of Dr. Atkins the Atkin’s Nutritionals filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Then in 2005 the company arose to open the new diet trend, called the Atkins Diet.
Why Should We Consider the Atkins Diet?
Atkins knew that the main cause for concern in the US and obesity was the fact that we are consuming too many carbohydrates. Many of these include sugars and flours. Some of the foods are breads, high in fructose syrup and then there is foods that are are rich in oils that are not good for your body either. All oils are not good for you unless it is canola oil or olive oils. Breads consist of the most carbs, especially white bread.
What Does the Atkins Diet Consist of?
You can eat meats and other foods that are high in cholesterol. There may even be some controversy over that but it is part of the Atkins Diet. As long as you are eating foods that are not high in carbohydrates then you are okay. Yes, you are allowed to eat foods such as avocado dip and eggs (with yolks) and that is fine when it comes to the Atkins Diet.
Stay away from sweets and things of that nature. Sugars of all kinds need to be avoided. If you are a coffee drinker, no sugar! You must avoid things like milk, rice, white bread, white potatoes and pastas but you are allowed to eat different fruits and vegetables after the first couple weeks.
Basically you are eating foods that are extremely high in fats and protein. You are able to eat everything from red meats and fish to regular cheeses and even mayonnaise. If you are wanting to cook, it is advised to cook with butter and olive oil if it is fried.
Also it is advised to eat foods that are high in fiber as well. There will be a slack on the diet after the first few weeks. You will be allowed to eat a minimal of carbs as well as fruits and other foods that have natural sugars.
The intentions of the diet is to get your body balanced and to use it’s natural carbohydrates to remove fat. It also decreases your appetite to where you are not always hungry. This may seem strange to those of us who find breads and pastas filling. Eating ‘thick’ foods such as avocado and even eggs are sure to fill you up.
There is a Downside to this Diet as Well
As with any diet, you have to roll with the punches ‘so to speak’. You have to just get out there and do something about your weight and your doctor will definitely be the one that you can go to. He is the one that will tell you about your body and what would be the best diet for you.
There are many ways that you can diet and it is totally up to you to which one that will best suit your body and your everyday life. There are downfalls in all diets and you won’t know unless you try it. Then there is that question; do I really want to try it? It takes time and dedication. Results don’t come over night. It depends on whether or not you want to go on the diet and give it a try or not. There are many ways that you can diet. Choosing the right one for you is totally up to you.
It is also recommended to exercise on a regular basis as well. There are ways that you can exercise to keep the ultimate fit. There are things that you can do to maintain your weight and find a balance in the Atkins diet, just like any other diets.

Surviving the Current Financial Meltdown
October 2, 2009 by John38 · 9 Comments
In the current climate of near certain worldwide economic crisis there has been a traumatic worldwide economic meltdown which has put the world economy as we know it at risk. There are many companies who will not survive but there are some who will not only survive but will benefit in these unfortunate times. For instance our business in web design has increased recently because in an effort to reduce costs companies are turning to the internet to improve sales without incurring huge overheads. So companies like ours suddenly are in greater demand. However for the majority of the population it is a question of surviving and getting through it. If your business is on a sound financial foundation and you have money behind you then this will be beneficial in the coming months. You may even be able to reduce employee salaries for a period of time, rather than have redundancies or even closing down, but whatever strategy you apply it will need to be with the agreement of the workforce because a company is dependent of the good will of its employees at such a time. During the early stages of the crisis the British company JCB, which makes big machinery like bull dozers and diggers, chose with the agreement of the workforce, to reduce everyone’s salary for 6 months rather than lay off people or go out of business.
Cash flow
Most businesses go to the wall because of problems with cash flow. If there is not enough money coming it to pay for goods and services then it will not be long before a company goes into liquidation. Constant monitoring of the financial position is crucial. It is so easy to spend and not realise how much is leaking out and where it is all going. Keeping a tight control on costs is always a vital activity because that is what makes or breaks a company. More profits always come from reducing outgoings whether it’s reducing waste or cheaper purchasing or decreasing the workforce. I once listened to an audio tape on how to become wealthy and the one item to impact me was the advice to plug the leaks. Most people when running short of money try to find a way of making more money, but without a balance of reducing outgoings they never seem to resolve their problem. The simple reason is that when people earn more they spend more. If you imaging a bath with the tap turned on to fill it up. If the plug is securely in place the bath will fill up fairly quickly. But if the bath was full of holes no matter how much water you pour into the bath it will never fill up. The analogy is that the bath is your bank account, the tap is your earnings and the holes are your spending. Since listening to that tape, I have made a point of keeping expenses to a minimum at home and at work and every little sum of money coming in I see as a positive step to achieving wealth. To achieve sustainable wealth it is essential to take control of your spending and plug the leaks.
Avoid buying anything unless you absolutely have to or defer some necessary purchase for a few more months if possible. It’s amazing how you can manage without something for a period of time by using up existing or old stocks and making sure that waste is reduced to an absolute minimum.
Look for Discounts when Purchasing.
When you do have to procure goods to run the business, make sure you look out for bargains or negotiate for a better deal than you may have achieved previously. When times are tough, sales with no profits are better than nothing and there are some good deals to be had. One company I recently heard about sold a house for half the price when a customer came along with a cash offer. Part of providing guaranteed SEO services requires that we host websites too, and we were spending quite a lot on this each year, so by consolidating various accounts we slashed the annual hosting costs by over 50%.
Look for Discounts in purchasing.
By taking a good long hard look at all of the business overheads I am sure it will be easy to identify those areas similar to ours where you have large outgoings. If those costs are essential to the functioning of the business then looking for better deals with other providers or renegotiate with current provider to maybe save thousands of pounds. So in many ways the current economic climate could be seen as a good thing because it forces businesses to review their outgoings and get rid of the dead wood. In any business, the higher the outgoings, the smaller the profits. When there is an economic downturn or some loss of business unless you have unlimited capital set aside, it is essencial to reduce spending otherwise the business will not survive. Most really successful businesses understand the value of controlling outgoings and constantly review costs, even when times are good. I always remember my mother and grandmother saying of someone who was well off, that they were rich because they never spent their money, they hung onto it.
Tighten your Belt – No need for Fancy Spending
Although looking at reducing large overheads is one way to improve the viability of your company, another is to pay attention to the small amounts going out. It is so easy to think ‘Oh it’s only a few pounds’ but small amounts add up and can so easily get out of control. Remember that old saying ‘take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves’ I think it is so true. So cut out unnecessary spending, no perks on the business such as lunches or dinners to woo customers. They rarely actually need it if your business is offering honest value for money and top class services, and in most cases customers and prospects will appreciate you being prudent if it means you stay in business and continue as their valued suppliers. Bosses can lead the way by paying themselves less or taking a pay cut showing that they are willing to tighten their own belts. Recently it was announced that Bruce Forsythe was taking a cut in salary for his position as the host of Strictly Come Dancing, one of the most popular programmes on TV at the moment. He believed that they were being paid too much and put his money where his mouth was. There is nothing worse than asking other people to manage on less when you are not prepared to do so yourself.
Another major area of expense is salaries and the costs that go with them. If you employ a large number of people the overhead expenses are huge. However there is always a natural wastage where people leave or retire so without actively having to make people redundant there may be occasion to reduce the wages bill when times are hard. Efficiency and effectiveness of the people working in the company is critical and communicating with the workforce as to how they can reduce wastage and be more effective can be a rewarding policy.
One example from my previous work in organisations was when running a supervisors workshop. One of the delegates was complaining that when he needed to order supplies he had to sent the request up the line and wait until the senior manager had given the go ahead. As he was responsible for keeping supplies stocked and felt very frustrated at the time it took for him to get the approval he needed. I was amazed to hear that he was being so hampered in doing his job properly. So when I asked the question. ‘What’s to stop you ordering the goods yourself?’ after a long think, he said it had always been done that way. Nobody had questioned the procedure and whether it was still necessary to follow it. The outcome was that the he was given the go ahead to do the ordering himself and the senior manager was freed from one task he could happily do without.
Do Your Customers have Financial Liquidity?
If one of your customers is a very large company and they are source of the majority of your revenue then you are in a high risk position. It is a good idea to ensure that you have more than one high volume customer as well as lots of smaller ones so that you will be covered if one suddenly defaults on payment.
Find out the financial viability of your best customers. When the income of a customer falls then their ability to purchase goods and services is affected. If they are able to pay, then you will be able to pay your suppliers. There is nothing worse than doing a lot of work or selling a lot of stock to customer and then not getting paid. Situations like this can often cost you money, and that is the road to financial ruin, so be sure to be aware of your client’s economic situation as best as possible. We use the free Dunn and Bradstreet financial tracking service to identify any negative changes registered against any of our major clients
A customer of ours who are a team of town planning consultants were lucky their business was very healthy with good cash flow when a large customer went into liquidation owing about £10,000. This was a lot of money to lose but their business was very healthy financially and they survived.
Find out the financial stability of your best customers. When the income of a customer falls then their ability to buy goods and services is reduced. If they are able to pay on time, then you will be able to pay your suppliers. There is nothing worse than doing a lot of work or selling a lot of stock to customer and then not getting paid. Situations like this can often make the difference between success or failure. The cost to you in money and wasted effort and resources could be the road to financial ruin, so make sure you are aware of your client’s economic situation as much as possible. When the financial crisis happened one of our best customers suddenly switched to a two month payment plan which meant that we did not get any money from them for a month. When we protested the chief executive told his manager to find another suppler. There were a number of outstanding invoices worth thousands of pounds and we were powerless to do anything. Our overheads were compromised for that month but we were fortunate enough to have access to a reserve fund to tide us over. And yes we did get paid the whole amount over time.
Avoid Borrowing Money
When the world is in a financial crisis it is better not to borrow money if you can help it. If you have already borrowed significant sums of money then make sure you talk to your bank and get the best deal on repayments you can. If it’s possible to repay a chunk of money to reduce the interest you are paying out then do so. To me interest is money Down the drain and is not good money management. Having said all that, the interest rate in America is just over 1% and recently rates have been radically reduced in the UK. But that in itself is what caused this whole financial mess in the first place. People borrow money cheaply then re-lend it at a higher rate of interest and take the difference in profit. Once the interest rate rises to a more normal level they will bail out and take their billions off to buy an island somewhere while everyone else pays the price. I know that is an over simplification of the problem, but it serves to demonstrate that the greed of a few has caused the distress of thousands of the majority.
In my property rental business, a few years ago I had to let a house at a reduced rent but found a good long term tenant. This meant that the income was only just covering my costs but subsequently, because of the drop in interest rates, the mortgage repayments on the property have been reduced by £150 a month. This means I have been able to realise a small profit and with that money I am reinvesting it in improvements to the house. Long term I see it as a good investment to maintain the standard and value of the property. So for some companies who have had to borrow money to stay afloat there is the benefit of lower interest rates to reduce the burden of repayments.
You Only Have to Make it Through
The world financial situation at the moment, I realise, is much more complicated than is indicated above. But the simple ways of dealing with crisis can often be the best option. Cut everything down to the bone and think about the days when people did not have such complicated lives. They managed their businesses without consultants for tax advice , a water cooler, coffee machines and other such luxuries that we often take for granted. They made do by either doing extra work themselves or just going without. Obviously as your business grows, or recovers, it doesn’t become economically viable to sit and trawl through tax return forms or to have to do a lot of extra research and administration yourself, so you can restore those facilities that help to make you money once you have recovered your initial position.
Now I am not suggesting that we should go back to the good old days. What I am saying is that we might think we can’t manage without all our gimmicks such as mobile phones that take photos, but the reality is that we can do more with a great deal less, as long as we put ourselves into the right frame of mind and think positively about what we can achieve rather than what we haven’t got. Obviously as your business grows, or recovers, it doesn’t become economically viable to sit and trawl through tax return forms or to have to do a lot of extra research and administration yourself, so you can restore those facilities as and when you have recovered your financial equilibrium.
Think what the Victorians did with the limited resources they had at their disposal. The horse was the main mode of transport and they used the manure to heat cold- frames and managed to grow pineapples without any other form of heating. They did not have cars, computers, mobile phones or even phones. The railway was only just coming into being, and they did not even have electricity. But with their energy and ingenuity they conquered the world. The industrial revolution with their steam driven machines changed our economy for ever. In the past there was no such thing as designer and yet businesses survived|thrived.
Stay in a Positive Frame of Mind
By this I do not mean be in denial and pretend the world is not going through a financial challenging time. But if you are continually thinking and worrying about the negative aspects of the financial situation, then you are likely to make it come true. Don’t forget you get what you wish for and by concentrating on something then it will work like a wish, so why not concentrate on ways of getting new customers, giving better value to your existing customers and how your company could offer new products or services to your existing customer base?
Conclusion
Although during this recession there is no doubt times are hard for people who have lost their work. No work, equals no money coming in, so how do people pay their bills and their mortgages? If consumers have been prudent during times of prosperity and they have a nest egg for a rainy day, then they can probably manage for a few months until they get another job. But if they are already up to their eyes in debt then they will face personal bankruptcy and could lose everything.
.
In spite of all that, some people are managing quite well if they have jobs or some other type of income. One article I read recently said that the death rate reduced noticeably during recession and put that down to eating more healthily at home and not eating so much junk food. So OK we can’t afford to go out for meals as much, and things are more costly, but home prepared food is often better for you and sharing meals with the family is a way of coming together and communicating. So it’s not all bad. Good luck for a prosperous future.

Do You Really Need to Lose Weight?
September 1, 2009 by John38 · 11 Comments
The subject of weight loss is a tricky subject in America. Self-images get distorted by what we see in the media, especially on TV and in the movies. So many young girls (and boys, too) think they are fat, when they are actually underweight and become anorexic or bulimic, or have other eating disorders.
For many losing weight is a good way to improve one’s overall health and maybe necessary for one’s survival. But for those whose concept of their bodies are off kilter, trying to lose weight can become a horrible nightmare that can lead to one’s death.
Figuring out when you need to lose weight and when you do not is an important step in taking control over your health care. This is your body and reaching that balance point of your optimum weight can add years to life.
So should you be taking off some pounds? While this depends upon your personal judgment, in general, if you are more than 20 pounds overweight, losing those pounds can improve your health.
The first thing to do is to look-up the recommended weight for someone of your size and age. Next take into consideration that everyone’s body is different. Your ratio of fat to muscle will be different than someone else’s. And being a little heavier maybe just right for you. If you are an athlete, for example, than those “extra pounds” may be all muscle that you need for your work.
Check with your doctor if you feel like your weight is out of balance. A doctor can tell if your weight is normal or not. And it maybe time to lose some weight.
There are people, however, who definitely do not need to lose weight. Hey, if you aren’t as thin as your favorite actor or model, that doesn’t mean you need to lose weight. Here is a little behind the scenes secret: Models and actresses are airbrushed in photos to look more toned. They wear clothes that enhance their shape. And they are often forced, for their jobs, to weigh less than is healthy for them.
If your body weight is normal, you do not need to lose weight, even if your pants are a size bigger than the celebrity of the month.
There are also periods in your life when it is natural to be gaining weight. This is especially common during puberty and for the first few years into your early twenties. If you are gaining weight, check out the rest of your body – are you going through a growth spurt in height as well?
If you have started working out, you may also be gaining weight, at first. As you tone your muscles, you will look better, but may weigh more. That is because muscles are heavier than fat. More muscles and less fat is a good thing.
Finally don’t base your weight loss or gain decisions simply because someone else makes a rude comment about your looks. People are cruel. Remember that everyone has a different body make up. If you are happy with your weight and it is within the normal range for someone of your age and height, chances are that the rude comment is stemming from other issues, not because you actually need to lose weight.
Be happy with yourself and eat a healthy diet. There is an optimum weight for you, but you get to decide what it is and whether losing weight is the right thing to do.
Congress Thanks Scots Poet Robert Burns On His Inspiration To The American Founding Fathers!
August 9, 2009 by John38 · 9 Comments
Scots Poet Robert Burns may have been dead for a couple of hundred years but that did not stop him earlier this year from making an impressive impact on the House of Representatives. In fact the impact caused them to pass a Resolution to confirm the link between the work of Robert Burns and the USA.
The resolution was submitted by Mike McIntyre (already well known for his Scottish ancestry) from North Carolina the US state with more people of Scottish descent living there than live in the entire country of Scotland.
The Resolution also recognised that Robert Burns had truly inspired the Founding Fathers of America writing inspirational poems such as “Ode for General Washington’s Birthday” and “Ballard on the American War”.
“Scots Wha Hae”
Scots Wha Hae by Robert Burns was at one time regarded as the unofficial national anthem and is still a strong contender if Scotland gets its independence. It was strongly inspired by the American struggle for independence from the same English government.
At the back of Robert Burns mind was his strong belief that the United States victory in achieving independence would trigger off a monster size wave of independence war happening right across Europe.
President Abraham Lincoln
Shortly before his election President Abraham Lincoln attended a Burns Supper giving the burns Immortal Memory speech. This very personal speech is given at every Burns Night Supper each year to remind everyone why they are meeting to remember the Scottish Bard. It was reported that Lincoln was so moved enough by Robert Burns life and his poetry he tried with mixed success to give the address in an America version of the Scots Tongue (not and easy task for anyone to do even us born and living in Scotland would have to practice this).
