Golf Practice Aids

What is a Golf Swing Launch Monitor?
In baseball, a speed gun similar to what police use to check on the speed of motorists is used to check the speed of a pitch. In golf, a device called a golf swing launch monitor is one of many golf practice aids used to study the swing aspect in a game.
Golf swing aids are designed to tell a golfer why the ball is flying in a certain direction after the golfer hits it with the club. With the information gathered, the golfer will know what is wrong so the appropriate changes can be made.
How it works is by compiling the data comprising of more than 100 swings made by the golfer. Professionals are not the only ones who use this data because even amateurs use this as well.
Now that these are produced by various companies, it is easy to find one when you go to a sporting goods store.
But what must the golf swing launch monitor have when you go out looking for one? It must be able to tell you the following information which includes ball speed, club head speed, face impact position, flight time, launch angle and yards off line.
But what does the information tell you exactly? Well, if your ball speed isn’t in proportion with your club head speed, this means that you are not hitting the ball as far as you want it to go. Ideally, there should be a 1:1.5 ratio between these two. In simple terms, a club head speed of 100 mph will let you make the ball travel at 150 mph.
If you think getting this number is easy, think again because most professionals are only able to hit a 1:1.4 ratio. If your numbers are way off, do your best to try and achieve this number.
Another thing to watch out for in the golf swing launch monitor is the launch angle. The lower it is the better because this will make the ball travel farther. Tiger Woods who is one of the best golfers of all time launches at 12 degrees. Should you do the same? Not necessarily but if this works for you, then why not.
There are other indicators that can tell you more about your golf swing but take note that these will cost a bit more. These devices can even tell you the average of your shots in various areas and compare them which will helpful to improve your game.
This monitor has Golf swing software that can be even be hooked up to your computer which is even better.
Of course to achieve the right angle and speed, it has a lot to do with your technique. There are other tools you can get to help you practice your golf swing like hiring a coach, practicing in front of a mirror, recording yourself and putting some of the aids on.
Will this make you play better? In most cases yes so you should consider using them if you are still not able to improve your game like you have hoped.
Years ago, there was no machine that could analyze your golf swings. We should be happy then with tools like the golf swing launch monitor because you are no longer guessing if you are doing well or not when everything can be seen in the numbers.
Proper Stance For Long Golf Shots
September 26, 2009 by John38 · 10 Comments
The golfer’s stance when addressing the ball, depends on the length of the shot. Discussed here are the square stance, the open stance and the closed stance. How the golfer’s feet are placed will be described in relation to a straight line that might be drawn parallel to one representing the golf ball’s path. The line of flight is what this line is referred to as. A curved trajectory is the reality of the golf ball’s path, of course.
When taking a longer type of shot, a closed stance is the one that is commonly used. This stance has the toe of the forward foot right on the line of flight, with the trailing foot’s toe pulled off the line by an inch or more. In using the closed stance, the golfer’s body has more freedom of movement for longer shots while enabling the hands and clubhead to more naturally go along an inside-out path.
With medium irons the square stance is most suitable. When this stance is used a line drawn from toe to toe would be parallel to the line of flight. The forward foot is positioned somewhat open, turned out a little in the direction of the swing, with the golfers weight evenly distributed on both feet. Shots using woods and long irons sometimes utilize this stance as well.
The open stance is typically called on with the short irons. In these situationsthe forward foot is a bit behind the line of flight, for a more upright swing that imparts a backspin which is not wanted on long golf shots.

The New Golf Swing
January 19, 2009 by John38 · 5 Comments
Golf is a sport steeped in tradition, and for that very reason, changes in the game are always made very slowly. So the modern golf swing has not gone through much change over the years since Ben Hogan’s diminutive frame and little book defined what a good swing should look like.
All that may soon be changing, though. A couple of respected golf instructors have developed a new golf swing after 20 years of research using real people, science and the latest computer technology. The new swing is called Stack and Tilt. It is so named because you stack all your weight over the ball and keep it there throughout the swing. The only way to effectively do this as your body is swing the club in an arc around yourbody is to “tilt” your torso toward the target.
By keeping the head directly over the ball trhoughout the swing, the golfer mainatins excellent balance and hits the ball with a precise, descending blow which rockets the golf ball off the clubface in an explosion of power. All this is done without the need to take a full backswing.
This swing is simpler, has less moving parts and forces you to hit the ball with a descending blow. A traditional golf swing has many moving parts and each motion is another opportunity for power “leaks” if not done absolutely correctly. By having fewer moving parts, there is less chance that the swing power is wasted in other areas, so all of the force is delivered to the ball.
Much of the stack and tilt golf swing seems to go against everything you’ve ever learned about swinging the club, and that can make it difficult to switch. Old habits are hard to break. But if you take the time to learn the new swing, you may find that it provides everything you need for a super consistent swing and added distance.
