Vancouver Island British Columbia

Vancouver Island is a large island in British Columbia, just off Canada’s Pacific coast, separated from the mainland by the Strait of Georgia. It is 460 km (286 mi) long and up to 80 km (50 mi) wide, a magnificent landscape of emerald forests, snow-capped mountains, flower-filled meadows, crystal-clear ice-cold lakes and rivers, and pristine coastline pounded by the Pacific Ocean. The island is paradise for outdoor pursuits enthusiasts, and it is one of the few places in the world where you can play golf and go skiing on the same day.
There are mountains down the centre of the island, the Vancouver Island Ranges, dividing it into the rugged and wet west coast and the drier east coast with a more rolling landscape. The highest point on the island is the Golden Hinde at 2,195 m (7,200 ft), lying within the Strathcona Provincial Park, and there are a few glaciers here, the largest of which is the Comox Glacier.
The west coast is rocky and mountainous, characterized by fjords, bays and inlets, while the interior has many rivers and lakes, of which Kennedy Lake, northeast of Ucluelet, is the largest.
At the southern tip of the island is the elegant capital, Victoria, with its historic parliament, narrow streets dotted with cafes, pubs and colourful gardens, and boats floating lazily in the sparkling harbour. There is an abundance of sights to experience here, including the world-famous Butchart Botanical Gardens, with over a million plants. The gardens are divided into themed areas, such as Japanese or Italian, and each is a beautiful garden in its own right.
Activities available in this big outdoors include skiing, white-water rafting, caving, mountain biking, surfing, sailing, diving and snorkelling, bungy jumping and many other exciting pursuits. There are deep-sea fishing trips for halibut, salmon and chinook, whale-watching excursions or kayaking in the inlets of the Pacific Rim National Park.
Trekking and hiking through the wilderness is also popular here, and can be done on horse or on foot along the trails in the fir-lined woods. Wildlife viewing is becoming more and more popular, with black bears high on the wish-list, and ecotours by boat can offer sightings of bald eagles, sea lions and sea otters.

ECUADOR – one country with four genuinely distinguishing geographic regions
February 22, 2009 by John38 · 12 Comments
The three main geographic regions on the mainland are:
- The coast also named “La Costa” on the Pacific Ocean
- The highlands also designated “La Sierra” which means the mountain range of the Andes running from North to South through the whole country
- and the Amazon rainforest also called “El Oriente”.
The Galapagos Islands (in german: Ecuador Galapagos Inseln) – the fourth region – is an insular region in the Pacific Ocean.
It is a breath taking moment, standing there on an island where nobody lives – only some endemic species you cannot find anywhere else in the world. Swimming with sea lions, sea turtles and sharks is nearly as overwhelming as walking over one of the islands, watching fascinating species like the blue-footed boobies, lava lizards, albatrosses, marine and land iguanas, mockingbirds and innumerable different kinds of finches. This is what this province of Ecuador is famous for: the vast number of endemic species.
So if you are interested in fascinating animals and plants this is the place for you! Even if you have not been interested in plants and animals before, there is a great chance you will be after visiting this archipelago of volcanic islands that is also located around the equator.
Usually you land at “Baltra” where you find the airfield. From there you can go to one of the bigger islands called “Santa Cruz” in Galapagos with the biggest city on the islands – “Puerto Ayora”.
At Santa Cruz you can visit the Charles Darwin Research Station with a tortoise breeding center as well as the highlands where you find a beautiful mangrove forest and interesting volcanic formations like the two big holes “Los Gemélos”.
Another interesting but very small island is “Santa Fe”. On Santa Fe you find a lot of land iguanas and sea lions as well as a forest of Opuntia cactus.
“Española”, the oldest island of the archipelago, hosts a large number of endemic fauna furthermore albatrosses and marine iguanas that change their colour during the breading season. This island offers the most beautiful beach for swimming and snorkelling: Gardner Bay.
The island “Floreana” – named after the first president of Ecuador (Juan José Flores) – houses species like pink flamingos and green sea turtles that nest on the island between December and May.
A wooden barrel is kept at Post Office Bay where post could be picked up by ships passing by and was delivered to its destination.
Formidable underwater volcanic coral formations can be found snorkelling or diving in Galapagos at the “Devil’s Crown”.
Ecuador is a country like a dream – only by going there you can find out yourself!
