I live in a small, rural village of souther Thailand, right smack dab in the middle of the rubber tree plantations and have met several Mandarin speaking individuals (one from Harbin) and at least two who speak Cantonese (ya..right, more likely here than Northern China, no?) Gibberish? Well, I used to think so, until I began studying the languages. It's easy to give up on Cantonese with all the tones and same spellings in Pinyin for many different words. You have to be so careful, or you might be insulting someone (at the worst) or just looking like a total fool. My Mandarin sucks really, but I realize that in Guangzhou I could get away with less tone inflection than in, say...Beijing.]]>

OMG I can't do haunted houses AT ALL. And I used to LOVE Are You Afraid of the Dark, except for one they had about this like gremlin thing that lived in electronic equipment - I think it was a camera at first - and whatever it took a picture of that person got injured/died or something. And then my family took a trip to AZ to visit relatives, and I was sleeping in the living room with a TON of electronic equipment, and I freaked out and then spent the rest of the trip sleeping in my little cousin's room on a mattress on the floor. HAHAH.

I didn't say anything about sculpture. The use of optics in the past, or whether some artists experimented with them, is unimportant. For hundreds of years people who've modeled or sat for their portraits have described the working methods of master painters, and they don't mention the use of mirrors or cameras. Hockney's idea on this subject is like a conspiracy theory in which the most obvious facts must be ignored.
